7 Common Myths About Plastic Surgery

7 Common Myths About Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery is a field surrounded by many misconceptions. From the belief that it is only about appearance to the fear that results will always look “unnatural,” these myths can strongly influence the way people perceive aesthetic procedures.

Accurate information is essential before making any decision. Let’s take a closer look at seven of the most common myths about plastic surgery — and what is actually true.

Myth 1: Plastic surgery is only about appearance

Aesthetic improvement is an important part of plastic surgery, but it is not its only purpose.

Many procedures also have a functional role. Rhinoplasty, for example, may be combined with procedures that improve breathing. Blepharoplasty can sometimes help when excess upper eyelid skin affects the visual field, while breast reduction may relieve discomfort related to the weight of the breasts.

Plastic surgery often addresses both form and function.

Myth 2: The result will always look “done”

One of the most common concerns patients have is that it will be obvious they have had surgery.

Modern plastic surgery usually aims for the opposite: a result that looks natural, balanced, and harmonious with the patient’s existing features.

A well-planned procedure should respect the patient’s anatomy, age, facial or body proportions, and individuality.

Myth 3: The bigger the change, the better the result

This is not necessarily true.

In plastic surgery, a larger change does not automatically mean a better result. What matters most is proportion, balance, and how the treated area fits with the rest of the face or body.

For example, in rhinoplasty, there is no single “perfect nose” that suits everyone. The nose should be designed according to the proportions and unique characteristics of each individual face.

Myth 4: Everyone can have the same procedure with the same result

Every patient is different.

Anatomy, skin quality, age, medical history, previous procedures, and individual expectations all play an important role in treatment planning.

A technique that is suitable for one patient may not be the best option for another. Plastic surgery must always be individualised.

Myth 5: Plastic surgery is only for women

This is an outdated belief.

An increasing number of men choose aesthetic procedures to improve specific features or address age-related changes.

Rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, gynecomastia surgery, liposuction, and facial treatments are only some of the procedures commonly considered by male patients as well.

The most important factors are not gender, but the right indication, realistic expectations, and appropriate treatment planning.

Myth 6: Recovery is always extremely painful and difficult

Recovery depends on the type and extent of the procedure.

Not all operations involve the same recovery time or level of discomfort. In many cases, patients gradually return to their normal routine within a relatively short period.

Pain and discomfort can usually be managed with appropriate post-operative care and medication when required.

Proper preparation and clear pre-operative information help patients understand what to expect and plan their recovery more effectively.

Myth 7: Plastic surgery stops the ageing process

No aesthetic procedure can stop time.

Plastic surgery can improve specific concerns and create a more refreshed, balanced, or rejuvenated appearance, but the natural ageing process continues.

Sun exposure, smoking, lifestyle, nutrition, and skin quality can also influence how the results evolve over time.

Plastic surgery does not stop ageing — but it can be part of a well-planned approach to maintaining a natural and harmonious appearance.

The Importance of Accurate Information

The decision to undergo an aesthetic procedure should not be based on myths, trends, or images seen on social media.

It should be based on accurate information, realistic expectations, and an individualised assessment by a qualified plastic surgeon.

The goal is not to make someone look like somebody else, but to achieve a result that respects their own anatomy, features, and needs.

Considering Plastic Surgery?

A personal consultation with a plastic surgeon is the first step toward understanding your options, receiving accurate information, and determining which approach may be appropriate for you.

Every treatment plan should be individually designed, with safety, natural-looking results, and harmony as the main priorities.
