Quick Recovery Otoplasty

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is typically performed when the ear flaps need to be placed closer to the skull or when the size of large ears needs to be reduced.

The operation is aimed for adults, as well as youngsters aged 4 to 14. The ears are nearly fully formed by the age of four, therefore it's best to complete the otoplasty procedure as soon as possible before the child starts school and receives unfavorable feedback. Otoplasty is a straightforward and safe procedure that can be performed on both adults and children.

Advice! It is preferable to undergo the otoplasty procedure before the child starts school and receives any unfavorable feedback from other youngsters.

Designing the operating room

- The location of the operation

If total anesthesia is required, otoplasty can typically be performed in our medical facility or in a private clinic. The patient does not need to stay in the clinic and can go home the same day.

- Anesthesia method

Anesthesia is determined by the patient's age and physical condition; in children, general anesthesia is used, while in adults, local or intoxication is used (sleep deprivation).

The operating room

It takes around an hour, and the technique utilized is determined by the problem. Dr. Andreas Ioannidis uses a small incision at the back of the ear to remove the cartilage in one of the most popular methods. Sutures are put and do not need to be removed because they are absorbable.

What’s the next step after the surgery?

Adults will be able to return to their normal lives in two days. It will take around a week if the operation is aimed at children. Dr. Andreas Ioannidis recommends applying an elastic bandage on the head (tennis headband) after the operation to prevent the ear from folding during sleep.

Furthermore, the external image of the ears can be repaired with an otoplasty procedure, such as the ear lobe, small and deep ears with protuberance, and shell-shaped ears that lack the outer folds and curve of the outer crown.
